Software developers in India are going through a “massive transformation” as their industry is “becoming the most valuable” in the world, according to a new report.
The global software developer workforce is expected to reach 1.6 billion by 2020, according the report from The New York Times.
In India, the number of software developers is projected to double in the next decade, reaching a whopping 3.3 billion.
In India, a software developer is considered a “developer” when they can design, develop and test software applications and services.
According to the report, the demand for software developers in the country has risen steadily in the past few years, as Indian companies have sought to diversify their business models and become more profitable.
This has also resulted in a surge in the number and quality of software developer applications being created.
“As the number [of software developers] in India has gone up, so too has the quality of applications and the number that are created,” said Ramjit Sengupta, executive director at The New World of Software, a consulting firm.
“This is very much the next phase of growth.”
The New World found that India has become the “fastest-growing software developer market in the West” with a growth rate of 7.2% in the year to March 2020.
The industry is expected grow at a whopping 17.5% annually through 2020.
